For a country world renowned for its beef, it is perhaps surprising that Argentina leather does not have a higher stature than it does. But for anyone fortunate enough to have shopped Buenos Aires, this is indeed a happy circumstance. Much like a Mendoza region Malbec suffers in comparison to its Chilean red cousins, one thinks of Italy for genuine leather and not Argentina. A thousand dollars U.S. yielded two pairs of mens leather shoes, a pair of mens leather boots, two black leather overnight backs, a canvas and leather satchel, a black leather passport wallet and a brown shearling coat. A bounty to be sure. Genuine Argentina leather offers the best of all possible worlds. With an economy in recovery from an economic disaster only a few short years ago, prices are beyond affordable with a pair of leather shoes coming in somewhere around $35U.S. Yes, for both shoes. But price is not the only deciding factor. Shoes at these prices are a dime a dozen. Style and selection are also compelling reasons that would turn anyone into a wannabe Imelda Marcos. From formal to casual, sporty to spectacular there is truly something for everyone, although, in truth, and as always, footwear for women far outpaces the choices available for men. Influences from both North America and the runways of Europe are more than evident. And while price does not always rule, as is clear with a sojourn to some of the city's higher end malls, the individuality and uniqueness in design allow your feet to make the statement of their choice. While leather boutiques abound from Palermo to Recoleta and around high traffic areas like the Avenue de Mayo or the pedestrian stroll that is Florida, wander off the beaten path and you're sure to happen upon the craftsmanship of Argentina leather that is absolutely genuine. While known for its abundance of antiques, hidden along the narrow streets of the San Telmo district are the artisan shops bejeweled with Argentina genuine leather goods. Bereft of brand and its associated costs, design, quality and craftsmanship stand out and stand alone. From bags to briefcases, satchels to sandals, and coats to clutches, it is near impossible to find something you can't live without. For the more daring among us, black and white cowhide bags and briefcases stand out among the muted browns and the stylish black leather goods. And for those in search of something truly unique, there may also be ostrich, lizard or capybara leather products available. The biggest difference between shopping retail stores or the little shops, is of course, the service. Shop owners, and more often than not, the designers of their products, take time to show show not only anything your eyes should chance upon, but the intricacies and nuance of every detailed stitch. Salesmanship, of course. But there is also an inherent pride in their offering. These are not factory made products, although the designers consider them such because they farm them out to area locals the designs they conceive, with an everpresent eye on quality control. Well worth the purchase price, more often than not, the most genuine facet of Argentina leather extends beyond the quality, the suppleness, the design, the craftsmanship or the durability to the hands that have painstakingly and lovingly created each piece.
