Having just returned, here are ten reasons for a gay man or woman to visit Buenos Aires. The Conversation Value - Buenos Aires is the gay it destination. And rightfully so. There is little that isn't charming about this Paris of South America. From the restaurants to the shopping to the sights and the sounds, BA has much to offer. And as the first South American country to recognize gay unions, the city is nothing if not gay friendly. The Exchange Rate - At approximately 3 pesos to the dollar (June 2006), there is little that is out of reach. From the best of restaurants (Try Cabaña las Lilas where an extravagant beef dinner fit for any carnivore runs less than $100.) to the best of shopping (For clothes, Palermo. For antiques or leather goods, San Telmo.) nothing is out of reach. The Beef - Cabaña las Lilas is considered Buenos Aire's best parilla or traditional beef barbecue. It is also one of the most expensive although by standards of New York, Chicago, Paris, London or Toronto it is more than affordable. With appetizers like entres, and entres like smorgasbords, be sure to bring your appetite. They raise their own beef which goes well with a Mendoza region Malbec. The Beef - Part II - There's a lot to be said for dark features and dark hair. And in gay Buenos Aires, the eyes have it. All of it. The Beef - Part III - There's an overwhelming temptation to quip about gay men and their baggage or gay men and leather here but Buenos Aires offers the best of both. Well, in fact, all three: gay men, baggage and leather. The artisan shops of San Telmo offer quality, craftmanship, style, design and selection in a multitude of leather goods. Whether brown, black or cowhide; satchels, shoes or coats, the prices will leave you with no beef whatsoever but with plenty to crow about. Her - What Evita did for Andrew Lloyd Webber's bank account he certainly returned to the Buenos Aires economy and tourist trade, in pesos. Whether Elaine Paige, Patti Lupone, Madonna or Argentina's own Elena Roger, currently on the boards in London's West End, there isn't a single gay man who can honestly think Buenos Aires without thinking Evita. Her Final Resting Place - It is perhaps the ultimate of ironies that the woman never recognized by Argentina's elite should be entombed among them. The Recoleta Cemetery is a marvel and anyone lucky enough to go in search of Evita's tomb will spend far more time looking into innumerable tributes to the afterlife. It ranks among the best funereal environments in this and the other world. And rightly so. PS - Hers is among the more understated within. Oh, and don't pet the feral kitties -- those little demons. The Pharmacy - If affordable, delicious cuisine is your drug of choice, La Farmacia in San Telmo is just what the doctor ordered. Charming, ambient and utterly affordable for any traveler's budget, La Farmacia straddles the line between gay and gay-friendly, happily flirting with either. Or both. Order the sweetbreads, and your waiter, with an impish grin, will ensure you understand that it isn't bread. It may not be, but for the culinary adventurer, it's exactly the right prescription for a memorable and romantic evening. The Nightlife - Gay Buenos Aires has something for everyone, no matter who or what the age. The world's best DJ's vie to spin there. And there are the requisite clubs although the trend is more towards the rave scene with parties announced only days in advance. Start at Amerika or Glam and with all the right moves, you're sure to see the sun up. For those who no longer twinkle, with dinner at 10 and in the company of that certain someone, you're certain to find exactly the right excuse to stay up late. The Morning After - Gay Buenos Aires has such a relaxed pace that there is no such thing as lingering over a cup of coffee. There is only Cafe con Leche, a cigarette, the paper, the morning sun and an overwhelming desire to never pay six bucks at Charbucks when you can get it for two while watching the world pass by.
