In search of a gay vacation? The advent of the Internet has changed not only the process of booking a gay vacation, but the manner in which we take that vacation. What is surprising is that when it comes to gay shopping, corporate America should hold the gay dollar in seemingly higher esteem than does the gay community itself. The gay market is a technology savvy, early adopting market in part due to, frankly, porn, chat and classifieds. However, it has also meant a huge economic boon to content sites and to the gay travel market, one of the fastest growing Internet segments. Airlines, travel companies and specifically gay destination oriented vacation companies are springing up or seeing their original vision come to fruition. Cruise companies have evolved to offer more specialized cruise and gay vacation packages that include safaris and Vegas. Additionally, specifically but previously niched travel categories are also increasing their offerings to include gay adventure travel, dude ranches or family oriented destinations. When it comes to putting a gay vacation package together, the Internet is your oysterbed offering the ability to travel via an agency, an airline, a tailored package or the gay vacation destination of your choice. And as the Internet evolves, online offerings for the gay traveler become less and less caveat emptor as opinions are proffered with increased frequency, leading to more consciousness of online reputations and in keeping with an increased gay sensibility, ultimately more room bookings. From a gay-friendly hotel in Paris to a gay bed and breakfast tucked high in the Tuscan hills to a fabulous and remarkably affordable loft in downtown Buenos Aires, the world at large and the gay world in particular has become that much more accessibile. Not surprisingly, that means more companies, cities and airlines vying for the gay vacation dollar. And everyone benefits. Gay publications and web sites benefit from increased advertising revenue. Airlines and hotels benefit by increased bookings. Local market economies benefit from increased tourism dollars. At the end of the day, gay men and women also benefit. Not just because a new world has opened up to us but because the old world has woken up to us. And somewhere out there, as cynical as we are, there remain a few suprises. Like learning that a South America country like Argentina has had gay rights in its sights since 1998 and has in fact, focused world attention on human rights regarding gay men and women at no less a forum than the United Nations. And while living in gay Moscow may be no picnic, with more and more men and women planning a gay vacation there, a pride parade may just succeed next year.
